The Stephens Foundation is dedicated to dismantling systemic barriers that hinder civic engagement, aiming to empower individuals and communities to participate fully in democratic and social processes. The foundation's approach focuses on addressing inequities such as access to education, economic opportunity, and voting rights, ensuring that marginalized groups can advocate for their needs and contribute to shaping policies that affect their lives.
Civic engagement plays a critical role in advancing environmental justice. Historically, underserved communities, particularly low-income and minority populations, have been disproportionately impacted by environmental hazards such as pollution, poor air and water quality, and lack of green spaces. By fostering civic participation, individuals in these communities can demand accountability, advocate for equitable environmental policies, and influence decisions on land use, resource allocation, and climate resilience.
